John Steed which role was performed by Patrick Macnee, born on 6 February 1922 at London, acted in all seasons. He was an adventurer, an epicure also known as a man with a good taste, liked champagne and female beauty. But more than that he was a real gentleman always correctly dressed with his inseparable bowler and umbrella. Once proclaimed as the best dressed man on Earth. He found his own life unimportant but was prepared to give his life to save his partners. He liked to take risks and had a good sense of humour. |
|
Dr. David Keel which role was performed by Ian Hendry, born on 13 January 1931 at Ipswich, England, was in fact the first partner of John Steed and so played in the first season.. Except for Mike Gambit in the New Avengers he was the only male partner of Steed. I don't know much about his character, sorry for that! |

|
Venus Smith, which role was performed by Julie Stevens, born on 20 December 1936 at Prestwich, England, was in some episodes of the 2nd season the replacement for Cathy Gale. I'm sorry to tell I don't know much about her. |

Emma Peel, which role was performed by Diana Rigg, born on 20 July 1938 at Dowcaster, England, played in the 4th, the 5th and the 6th season (note that some people are in the opinion that the 5th and the 6th season forms together one season!) In fact she was the most succesful partner of John Steed. Her character is described as the best by ZZ von Schnerk in Epic :"Animal vitality, a woman with courage, beautie and action. Could become desperate and yet remain strong. Confused and yet remain intelligent who can fight back and yet stay feminine. She also had a good sense of humour. |
|
Tara King, which role was performed by Linda Thorson, born on 18 June 1947 at Toronto, played in the 7th season and was introduced in the Forget-me-knot and it was clear that she was inferior to Steed. I don't like to say she was doopy but she was lacking the charism of Emma Peel. She also was simple minded, almost childish but for some troubles she had the right unexpected solution. |

Mother, the codename for Steed's boss, which role was
performed by Patrick Newell, born on 27 March 1932 was
nearly almost bad tempered but very upright. He had a great
confidence in Steed. He was a man of no nonsense. By the
way, he was wheelchaired. He played in the
7th season in some episodes and
was introduced in the
Forget-me-knot.Also played in
(other role) |
|
Rhonda, whose role was performed by Rhonda Parker, born in 1947 was the helper of Mother and she never spoke a word. She played in some episodes of the 7th season. |

Purdey, whose role was performed by Joanna Lumley, born on 1 May 1943 at Srinagar, India was together with Gambit the partner of Steed in the New Avengers season 1 and season 2 She was emancipated, just as Emma Peel but in a different way |
|
And last but not least, there was Gambit, which role was performed by Gareth Hunt, born on 7 februari 1942 at London. Because of the fact Steed became elder, Purdey needed near Steed a male person who has the spirit of life and someone younger. He was beloved by women without being a casanova. He played in the New Avengers in season 1 and season 2. Gareth Hunt died on 14 March 2007 causaed by cancer. He was 65 years old. |
